Magento 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 end of life: what does this mean for your webshop?

Is your webshop still running on Magento 2.4.4 or 2.4.5? Then the clock is ticking. Both versions will reach their end of support in 2026, which means that Adobe no longer provides security updates or bug fixes. Don't panic, but a good time to reflect on the future of your platform. Because a Magento upgrade is more than a technical obligation. It is an opportunity to get your webshop ready for what is to come.

What exactly does Magento end of life mean?

When a Magento version reaches end-of-life, Adobe stops releasing patches, security updates and technical support for that particular release. Your webshop will continue to run as normal, nothing will change. But any vulnerability discovered from then on will remain open. And in a world where cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, that's a risk you don't want to take with a platform on which customers leave their payment details.

It is important to note that "end of life" is not the same as "your webshop is failing". It does mean that you have to continue on your own and the technical debt grows by the day. Compare it to a car for which the manufacturer no longer makes parts. It still runs fine, until something breaks down.

The specific deadlines for 2026

Adobe's schedule is clear. For Magento 2.4.4, extended support ends in April 2026. Regular support ended earlier, but with extended support you still had a buffer. That buffer has now run out.

For Magento 2.4.5, regular support ends in August 2026, with extended support also ending in August. That gives a little more breathing room, but not much. Especially when you realise that a Magento upgrade requires thorough preparation and testing.

So those still running on Magento 2.4.4 have the most urgency. But even for 2.4.5 users, it is wise to start thinking about the next step now. You don't plan an upgrade in a few weeks, especially if your webshop is business-critical.

Why waiting isn't an option

It is tempting to put off a Magento upgrade. After all, your webshop is still working well, the team has other priorities and the budget has already been allocated. Yet there are good reasons not to wait too long with this.

First of all, there is the security risk. Without patches, you are vulnerable to known exploits. And precisely those known vulnerabilities are the easiest to abuse, because they are publicly documented. For e-commerce platforms that process personal data and payments, this is a serious compliance risk.

In addition, you lose compatibility. Third-party extensions, payment providers and integration partners focus their updates on supported versions. The longer you stay on an outdated version, the more likely you are to break links or get stuck with a necessary update.

Finally, the longer you wait, the more complexthe upgrade itself becomes . Bridging the gap from 2.4.4 to the latest version is already significant. In six months' time, that gap will be even bigger, and with it the investment in time and budget.

New in 2026: Adobe's monthly patch model

Good to know is that Adobe has fundamentally changed its release policy. Whereas previously you had to deal with quarterly releases that often required a hefty upgrade effort, since January 2026 Adobe has been working with monthly isolated security fixes and an annual major security patch in May.

What does this mean in practice? Once you are running on a supported version, keeping your platform up to date becomes a lot easier. The monthly fixes are small and targeted, so you no longer have to wait months for a bundle of dozens of tweaks. It's a welcome change that makes maintenance more predictable and manageable.

By the way, this new model is another reason to upgrade now. Because as soon as you are on a current version, you will immediately benefit from this new, lighter maintenance cycle.

A Magento upgrade is also a strategic moment

This is where we would like to dwell, as this is perhaps the most important point. A mandatory upgrade feels like a cost. But at the same time, it is the perfect time to take a broader look at your platform.

How is your webshop really performing today? Are your load times where they should be? Does your checkout process still match your customers' expectations? Is your frontend ready for the increasingly stringent requirements around Core Web Vitals? And perhaps more fundamentally, does your current technical setup support your organisation's growth ambitions?

At PHPro, we always see an upgrade as an opportunity. A chance to eliminate technical debt that has accumulated over the years. A chance to evaluate whether a modern front-end framework like Hyvä can make your webshop faster, more maintainable and more future-proof. And a chance to reassess your integrations, workflows and architecture based on where your organisation is today and where you want to go.

How do you go about this?

A Magento upgrade doesn't start with writing code. It starts with a clear picture of your current situation and your goals. Exactly which version are you running? What extensions and customisations are there? What does your hosting environment look like? And what functional requirements have you been planning for some time?

Based on that inventory, you determine the scope of the upgrade. Sometimes a straightforward version upgrade is the best choice. In other cases, it is smarter to combine the upgrade with a front-end migration, a checkout optimisation or cleaning up legacy code.

Whatever you choose, make sure you have a solid testing process. A staging environment that imitates your production environment as accurately as possible is not a luxury but a necessity. Especially with business-critical web shops, you want everything to be thoroughly validated before you go live.

And plan realistically. A Magento upgrade is not a weekend job. Depending on the complexity of your setup, you will quickly need a few weeks to a few months, including testing and optimisation. So start planning now, even if your deadline isn't until August.
