Magento hosting: more than a technical choice

You have a performing webshop. Your team works with it every day. Orders are coming in, customers are paying, data is constantly flowing back and forth. But what is it all running on? And who is responsible if something goes wrong?

Hosting is one of those topics that many entrepreneurs consciously - or unconsciously - pass on to "someone else". Logical, because it is not the sexiest part of an e-commerce project. But it is a necessary component. And just like a house, you want that foundation to be solid, secure and future-proof.

Why hosting is so important for Magento

Magento, and certainly Adobe Commerce, is a powerful but also demanding platform. It processes large amounts of data, runs complex product catalogues and must continue to perform flawlessly at peak times, think promotions or seasonal peaks. Generic hosting is simply not enough for this.

Magento e-commerce hosting requires an environment specifically tailored to the platform's technical needs

That means

  • sufficient processing power and memory,
  • fast response times,
  • automatic scaling at higher loads
  • and an infrastructure that grows with your business.

A slow or unstable hosting environment has a direct impact on your loading times, your conversion rate and ultimately your turnover. Google is also watching: speed is a ranking factor you don't want to neglect.

GDPR and data in Europe: not a detail, but a requirement

If you run a webshop, you process personal data. Names, addresses, payment details, order histories. That brings with it responsibilities, and GDPR is crystal clear on that: data of European citizens belongs on European servers.

Sounds obvious, but in practice it is less so. Many hosting providers operate from data centres outside the EU, or use constructions where data crosses European borders anyway. This creates legal risks you really don't want to run as a company, especially if you operate in sectors where compliance is not an option but a must.

At PHPro, we only work with hosting partners, such as Hypernode and Hosted Power, who have their infrastructure in Europe. Secure data management for e-commerce is not an afterthought for us. It is a basic requirement that we consciously select and monitor. Your customer data stays where it belongs.

A special case: Adobe Commerce Cloud

If you already work with Adobe Commerce, or are considering that direction, you will inevitably come across Adobe Commerce Cloud. This is Adobe's own hosted solution, fully managed by Adobe and built on AWS, Amazon's cloud platform.

AWS has data centres in Europe, and Adobe can configure the environment to keep your data within the European region. Yet it is not a completely black-and-white story. Because AWS is a US company, it also falls under US law. Whether this is relevant to your organisation depends on your sector and the nature of the data you process. For most companies, this is not a barrier, but it is something to be aware of.

Adobe Commerce Cloud is a robust and scalable platform with a lot of advantages, especially for larger e-commerce environments. We feel it is simply our responsibility to share these kinds of nuances transparently. Because anyone who wants to make an informed decision about their hosting environment deserves the full information.

Do you doubt whether Adobe Commerce Cloud is the right fit for your situation, or do you want to know how to tackle the GDPR issue concretely? We are happy to think along with you.

Hosting as part of a bigger picture

One of the questions we regularly get is whether we also handle hosting. The answer is yes - but always as part of a complete project. Development, hosting and maintenance belong together for us. Not because we like to bundle it for bundling's sake, but because they are inextricably linked.

A well-built Magento environment only performs optimally if it is also running on the right infrastructure. And a hosting environment only pays off fully if it is managed by people who also know the application inside out. This cohesion makes the difference between a webshop that runs and one that really performs.

To this end, we work with specialised hosting partners, such as Hypernode and Hosted Power, who have proven that they can handle Magento e-commerce hosting at a high level. Fast incident response times, proactive management, clear SLAs and a strong focus on security are no nice-to-haves for us. We place the same demands on our partners as we do on ourselves.

What if you already have a hosting partner?

No problem. We are not tied to one fixed formula. Do you already have a hosting partner you are happy with, or do you have agreements running internally? Then we are happy to work with them. Together, we check whether the current environment meets the technical requirements of your platform, and where necessary, we advise you without pushing.

Our role is to unburden you and help you make the right choices - not to impose choices. Transparency and honest advice are key, even if it means concluding that your current setup is fine.

What makes a good hosting partner for Magento?

When exploring the market, there are a few criteria that we always consider.

  • The first is Magento specialisation. A hosting partner that knows the platform inside out can respond to issues much faster and optimises the environment proactively. Generic providers simply lack that knowledge.

  • In addition, the location of the data centres is crucial. European servers are an absolute minimum requirement for us, both from a GDPR perspective and from speed considerations for European visitors.

  • Scalability also plays a big role. A good hosting environment scales with you at busy times and down again when things are quieter, without you having to watch yourself or incurring extra costs.

  • And finally, security. Automatic backups, DDoS protection, SSL certificates, monitoring and a clear incident plan are basic requirements for any serious e-commerce environment. Secure data management for e-commerce starts with a partner who takes this seriously.

Peace of mind, focus on your business

The best thing about good Magento hosting is something you don't see. No downtime. No data loss. No panicked phone calls on a busy Friday night. Just a platform that does what it's supposed to do, day after day.

That may sound like a low bar, but in practice, it's the difference between a team that can confidently build for growth and one that keeps putting out fires.

At PHPro, we believe technology should bring calm, not stress. That applies to the code we write, the platforms we build AND the environment they run on.
